Vacuum Recommendation?

As part and parcel of making any local move, I will need to get a new vacuum cleaner. Right now, looking mostly at Hoover or Shark. Several people have highly recommended the Shark, with Hoover coming in second. What are your thoughts?

Getting hit by lightning is not fun! If you would like to help me in my recovery efforts, which include moving once we have medical issues cleared up, feel free to hit the fundraiser at A New Life on GiveSendGo, use the options in the Tip Jar in the upper right, or drop me a line to discuss other methods. There is also the Amazon Wish List in the Bard’s Jar. It is thanks to your gifts and prayers that I am still going. Thank you.

  1. We live in an RV and have found that a Shark does an excellent job for ~$100. My complaint is that the hose attachment for ours is two feet long and comparatively expensive. It’s almost the 1 1/4 inch standard… but not quite.

You say Hoover, and I think S3A Viking.

    1. Thanks for that input! Given that I use storage bags and other items that need a standard vacuum hose to fit them, very good to know. On the S3A Viking, LOL! Good one.

  2. We’ve gone through a bunch of vacuums over the years. I had a Hoover eat a paper clip, and dealing with that meant disassembling the motor-blower. It wasn’t worth it. IMHO, that’s the downside for that style of floor vac. The motor/blower sees all the debris.

Eurekas are inexpensive, but cheap. Decent if use isn’t that heavy. I have the one retired from the house in my shop for when I don’t want to use the big shop vac (with cyclone dump barrel, so huge). Their long hoses (12′?) are usable. Valves for tool vs floor.

Have a small Shark stick bagless. Lots of accessories, but the trap is tiny. If pets are on hand, try a Bissell. The only downside for the B is a shortish hose. The electric switch for the floor beater is handy. The main handle is also the tool-holder. No valve, but can be awkward if you have to get something too high.

FWIW, Costco has the Bissell at $130, the least expensive upright. Dysons are like $350. Never tried them.

    1. Thank you Pete! Much appreciated, and agree that having the motor take things first is bad design.

  3. Kenmore Intuition is the current vac. The bag goes before the motor. This is important for long-term durability. It is also very easy to maneuver around things quite useful. $0.02
