My father, a “tin can” sailor, was on a destroyer in the battle group of U.S.S. Enterprise when Pearl Harbor was attacked. It was only the good fortune that Enterprise was still out at sea when the attack occurred that saved him and his ship from the bombing.
I was stationed in Hawaii for four years as a member of the “Gold” crew of U.S.S. Patrick Henry (SSBN-599). Took the ferry to Ford Island (I hear that they finally built a bridge) every morning, passing the Arizona Memorial on the short trip over. Pretty sobering.
